Water Quality: An Ignored Global Crisis
  • This article highlights concerns about water quality and the lack of infrastructure improvements to storm water runoff, sewage treatment, and population growth. This article is brief and an easy read which will appeal to middle school teachers.
 
Water Most Foul at the Olympic
  • This New York Times editorial addresses concerns about water quality at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The article is to the point and cites multiple concerns with clarity and addresses the important of water quality, not only for the Olympians, but for all living within Rio de Janeiro who live with this problem and the potential health issues.

Tainted Water Near Colorado Bases Hints Wider Safety Concerns

  • This New York Times editorial addresses concerns about water quality in the state of Colorado. The concern is not about human waste but industrial waste stemming from the use of Aqueous Film Forming Foam which is a fire fighting substance used primarily on military bases.. Elevated levels of perfluorinated chemicals of PFC is the concern.
Toxic Waters
  • This site provides a list of articles about water quality concerns within the United States. The relevance of these articles cannot be overemphasized.

Testing the Waters
  • This NASA article addresses concerns about water quality related to runoff from farms, urban areas, industry, and construction sites. The concern is that rainfall and the resulting runoff can carry a multitude of pollutants into surface water in lakes, streams, rivers, etc.  This article provides a very nice follow-up to Enos’ lesson.

EPA Administrator Says Water Quality is Improving in Contaminated Western Rivers
  • There is still an optimistic outlook in terms of improving water quality. This article is focused on improvements noted in the water quality of contaminated western rivers.

NSTA Encouraging Young Scientist Series: Water Pollution
  • Use the water problems at the Summer Olympics as a focus for your science lessons.
